The Black Isle Music tune collection

a book of original music by

Keith Murphy.

This book includes tunes recorded by Nightingale, Assembly (Popcorn Behavior), Wild Asparagus, Big Bandemonium, Childsplay, and Becky Tracy on her solo recording, Evergreen. There are half a dozen waltzes of varied flavor, a bunch of jigs and reels, a couple of airs, plus a few oddities.

I used this tune as part of my arrangement of the shape note song, Clamanda on my CD, Bound for Canaan. Because I sing the song in Em, I transposed the tune to that key. But I have played the reel for dancing for several years in Dm in various configurations. The tune is very repetitive which helps create a hypnotic effect. Wild Asparagus has played it a lot as a surging wall of sound. Nightingale also plays it. The Moving Violations recorded it on their most recent CD. Assembly had a concert version with an intro in 21/8 that morphed into 4/4 (yes, really).

When I initially wrote the tune, I also wrote two harmony parts, each one having a separate harmony for A1 and A2, B1 and B2. So at any one time, the tune could be played in 3 part harmony and both harmony parts would change every 8 bars.

Bookmark this page and check back for other transcriptions of original tunes. My plan is to feature different tunes in this spot.
